and implementation of the Indigenous Welcome and Closing for Brisbane Festival

content for an Indigenous large-scale outdoor event.
Being part of YAMP 2008 could kick-start your career in the arts. This is an

Festival of Pacific Arts Call for EOIs

to participate in national or international training, in support of their

As part of the YAMP 2008 mentorship program, Brisbane Festival is offering
a role as Project Coordinator. The mentoree will be involved in the development
and implementation of the Indigenous Welcome and Closing for Brisbane Festival
2008 as well as assisting in the development of the local Indigenous programming
content for an Indigenous large-scale outdoor event.
Being part of YAMP 2008 could kick-start your career in the arts. This is an
opportunity to be mentored on-site by dedicated industry professionals. YAMP and
our partners will support the mentorship for 9 months through networking, arts
business training and an industry showcase event.

Festival of Pacific Arts Call for EOIs

Arts Agencies invites expressions of interest from Indigenous artists and
groups to be a part of the Australian delegation attending the 10th Festival
of Pacific Arts to be held in American Samoa from 20 July to 2 August 2008.

groups who have experience in the areas of traditional and contemporary

Festivals Australia Regional Residencies

Lord Mayor’s Young and Emerging Artists Fellowship

Young and Emerging Artists Fellowship is a directive of the Brisbane city

to participate in national or international training, in support of their
career development. Applicants must be nominated by an individual or
organization within the arts and cultural sector and be between the ages of
17 and 30. Activities supported by the fellowship include travel, study,

ANAT Australian Network for Art and Technology

The Lord Mayor’s Sustainability Grants

Letter that started the BlakStage Alliance
National Indigenous Theatre Company Meeting
Dear Indigenous Artist, Community Member, Indigenous
Theatre Supporter,
As you might already know there's been some talk of establishing a 'National' or 'Flagship' Indigenous Theatre Company with ambitious resourcing. The idea has been around for ages and if you think about the ambitions of ANTT in the 80's and 90's, we've been thinking about it for awhile. We are at a critical time and an opportunity may eventuate under the new government to create such a company.
Due to the slog of working in the arts I think we are in danger of losing some of our most talented Theatre artists if we don't gather resources to create a company that can - create works of scale -develop career paths for artists - and develop and expand the audiences for Indigenous Theatre across the country and across the world. These aims take resources that we have been unable to secure over the past 20 years.
Many people have opinions of what this Company could be and to this end the Harold Mitchell Foundation has made available $10K to facilitate a meeting of some of the key stake holders in Melbourne 15-16th Dec.
At this meeting it is hoped that we can hammer out some of the basic
principles of the new body, it's relationship to the existing Indigenous Theatre Companies, the structure and Artistic Brief.
A chance to Dream a bit.
A broad cross section of people will be attending and unfortunately we can't
afford to fly everyone in to be part of this meeting. A JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE
BLAKSTAGEalliance – the National Indigenous Theatre Network.
The BLAKSTAGEalliance supports the authentic voice of Indigenous performing cultures in Australia. We recognise the protocol and respect for our nations in the telling of our stories. We acknowledge that Indigenous performance is a 60,000year old artform and with this comes a strong connection to great traditions, innovations and practices, which stand as a testament and celebration of living Indigenous culture.
Through a process that has been non-consultative and non-transparent, we have been made aware of the move by an individual to impose a NATIONAL INDIGENOUS THEATRE COMPANY on the Indigenous arts landscape and at the expense of the existing BLAKSTAGE sector. Let it be known that the BLAKSTAGEalliance does NOT support a National Indigenous Theatre Company.
We will NOT be forced to accept an agenda which seeks to:
– Exploit our Indigenous performing cultures.
– Undermine the value of our sector.
– Pillage and plunder the cannon of Indigenous work that our companies have produced.
– Desecrate Indigenous protocol and respect.
– Further the self-interests of individuals over the National Indigenous community.
– Pull the financial resources away from initiatives and opportunities which benefit the WHOLE BLAKSTAGE community.
– Compromise our self-determination.
With over 800 Indigenous Nations within Australia, it is clearly apparent that one company is not adequate nor appropriate. What works, is the support and development of existing and future Indigenous determined companies across State borders, to enable Indigenous Australians to continue to tell their own stories.
February 25-29th 2008, the BLAKSTAGEalliance will come together on Kaurna Country in Adelaide to celebrate our Indigenous Performing Cultures. Standing together in unity at the Australian Performing Arts Market, we will commemorate this event with the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the founding companies of the BLAKSTAGEalliance. We encourage all Brothas and Sistas who have dedicated their pathway to the BLAKSTAGE sector, to come together and celebrate with us, and participate in a dialogue so that we can collectively determine our needs to ensure our future will remain For US, By US – to share with the world.
